On Wednesday 19 August, author Rabbi Levi Shmotkin came to Elsa High School for a tour and to speak to Grades 10, 11, and 12 about his recent book, ‘Letters for Life’, an inspirational book featuring spiritual guidance and wisdom drawn from letters written by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson OBM. Rabbi Shmotkin’s book offers practical advice and emotional support for daily life and personal growth.

As a Grade 12 student, I found the experience incredibly insightful and impactful. Rabbi Shmotkin shared the journey behind writing the book, from what inspired him to do it, all the way to how he actually came to writing. Personally, what I believe made the talk special was how he tailored some lessons from the Rebbe specifically for us. He intentionally adapted some of these stories and lessons directly so that we could apply them to our everyday lives as high school students. Themes included finding strength during difficult times, keeping a positive mindset, growing closer to faith and community, and how to be both a ‘giver’ and a ‘receiver’ in life. He emphasised that only through ‘giving’ - to our friends, family, and community - can we feel truly whole. 

Because Rabbi Shmotkin made everything so relatable, everyone was fully tuned in and listening the entire time. We all walked away having learned so much, and it ended up being a really valuable, engaging talk. I’m sure his visit made a lasting, positive impact on everyone in the room.
