The Junior Debate Team won their first debate against Cheung Chuk Shan College this Thursday, arguing against a motion requiring all unemployed people to participate in mandatory community service.

Their successful case stood upon the arguments that service would take valuable time away from job searching, leading to a vicious cycle in which an increasing number of unemployed individuals can not find a way back into steady work. The team, who participated via video conference, spoke with conviction about the government’s fundamental responsibility of care for vulnerable citizens, especially during the Covid era, and proposed a Universal Basic Income as an alternative solution to the problem addressed by the debate.

Next up are the Seniors, who will argue the affirmative position for the same motion against Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College.

Stay tuned for more from debate soon.
