Grade 3 Update (13 May)

It's been another short week with some bad weather thrown in, but Grade 3 did not let that get in the way of our learning! The children continued on with their learning and ended up having a fantastic week. Here is what happened in Grade 3 this week:

Wellbeing:
This week during our wellbeing lesson we spent time learning about diversity and celebrating the differences that we all have. We watched a great video where a lady with cerebral palsy discussed the challenges she faces each day and she pointed out that while there are things that she cannot do, there are many other things that she is great at! The video also discussed a child with a disability that caused him to be in a wheelchair. We were able to have an open, respectful discussion about diversity!

Math:
In math, we finished up our unit on position (mapping skills) by looking at the 7 continents and 5 oceans. The children learned the names of each continent and ocean and were able to label maps of the world with each. We identified some countries on each continent and identified the continent we live on!

We also spent time reviewing basic fractions, looked at equivalent fractions, and learned how to convert basic fractions into percentages and decimals.

UOI/Literacy:
Students completed the summative task that they were working on last week. They needed to create a charity to help those in need based off of one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They needed to use persuasive writing devices to help them convince other people to support their charity. A few examples are posted below.

We also started our next unit of inquiry about the science behind natural disasters. We completed a knowledge quadrant to demonstrate our previous knowledge, read books, and watched some videos to help pique the children's interest in this inquiry.
