Carmel School Robotics Team Meet Sophia the Robot

Hanson Robotics is an AI and robotics company dedicated to creating socially intelligent machines that enrich the quality of our lives. Founded by Dr. David Hanson, the Hanson team has built a worldwide reputation for creating robots that look and act genuinely alive, most famously their robot "Sophia". The Carmel School Robotics Team recently had the opportunity to visit their robotics lab in Tsuen Wan on 16 November. Our students had the privilege of seeing the design and fabrication process of different robots, and met Dr. Hanson who demonstrated Sophia's functions and allowed our students to interact with the robot.

Dr. Kevin Yau, Head of Robotics

This year the robotics team had the privilege of visiting Hanson Robotics to see Sophia the Robot. This experience has helped me to better understand how AI and Humanoid Robotics can better help the world. The team at Hanson Robotics explained how they were able to make Sophia the Robot so realistic and Human-Like. Through the use of a special material titled “Frubber” and 32 separate motors in the face alone, they were able to show and depict human emotions and expressions. The Robotics Team met the founder of Hanson Robotics, David Hanson, and in a Q&A session were able to learn about his journey and the difficulties he had to overcome in making Sophia the Robot.

The Robotics Team and I now have a better understanding and grasp on how Artificial Intelligence can help better our lives, and how the development of Sophia the Robot is a giant step toward creating a better world.
